Many crashes are caused by light vehicles not driving safely around trucks
While heavy vehicles only account for 2.3% of registered vehicles, they were involved in 19.1% of fatalities and 8.5% of hospitalised casualties in 2023.
There is an increase in injuries and fatalities in inner regional areas.
In 2023, there were 2,044 fatigue-related offences issued to heavy vehicle drivers who were long hours on the road. Fatigue is a major safety hazard not only for drivers, but also other road users.
