Tips to avoid driver distractions
Before you get going, there are a few things you can do to take away the temptation of using your phone while driving.
- Activate ‘Do not Disturb While Driving’ for Apple phones or ‘Do not Disturb’ for Android phones before you get into the car.
- Set your GPS, or playlist before leaving home (Open and P2 licence holders only).
- Remind your passengers that you need to focus on the road. Make sure kids and pets are safely restrained.
- If you really need to make a call or send a message, pull over and park safely first.
- Consider putting your phone out of easy reach when driving – in the glovebox, boot, in a bag. Remember it is illegal to hold a mobile phone in your hand or have it resting on any part of your body, including your lap when driving. This applies even if you’re stopped in traffic. The phone does not need to be turned on or in use for it to be an offence.
Mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras are now live in Queensland.
Mobile phone use and not wearing a seatbelt contribute significantly to the lives lost and serious injuries on our roads. That’s why cameras to detect illegal mobile phone use while driving and failure to wear a seatbelt are being rolled out.
